Ethanol production has always been a tight-margin business. Today’s volatility raises the stakes and creates new opportunities for producers that can respond quickly.

Corn prices move. Energy costs shift. Ethanol demand changes with policy, exports, and market conditions. Carbon intensity requirements add another layer of complexity — and another path to competitive advantage.

In this environment, operational efficiency still matters, but it is no longer enough on its own. The modern ethanol plant must use connected data to guide faster decisions, strengthen control, and protect margins.

In This Article

Margin Visibility Is the Competitive Advantage

When margins narrow, speed and visibility become essential.

Producers need fast answers to critical questions:

  • What is our crush margin right now?
  • How is grain quality affecting yield?
  • Are we seeing shrink between scale tickets and inventory?
  • How are co-products influencing overall profitability?

When those answers live in spreadsheets or disconnected systems, decision-making slows down. Slow decisions can quietly erode profitability.

Plants that unify grain accounting, contracts, inventory, production, and financials can respond faster and with greater confidence. That visibility gives teams the power to act sooner, reduce uncertainty, and improve margin protection.

Why Disconnected Data Slows Decisions

In many plants, operational and financial data still sit in separate systems. Teams often reconcile scale activity manually. Inventory adjustments appear at month-end. Reports reflect what has already happened rather than what is happening now.

That gap limits visibility at the exact moment leaders need it most.

Modern ethanol plants are closing those gaps by connecting data across the business. When systems work together, teams spend less time chasing numbers and more time improving performance.

How Modern Plants Connect Operations and Finance

Connected operations create stronger business decisions.

When inbound grain automatically updates contracts, inventory reflects near real-time positions, and financials tie directly to plant activity, leadership gains clearer insight into plant performance.

That clarity turns data into action. And action supports faster decisions, stronger control, and better margins.

From the scale house to the C-suite, connected visibility helps teams align on the same numbers and priorities.

Connected visibility helps ethanol producers make faster, margin-focused decisions with greater confidence.

Why Technology is Now a Strategic Asset

Ethanol producers are managing more than production. They are also navigating carbon-intensity tracking, compliance documentation, and increasingly stringent reporting requirements.

In that environment, accurate and traceable data becomes a business advantage.

Disconnected systems increase risk, introduce delays, and make reporting harder. Integrated systems create consistency, control, and confidence.

The plants best positioned for long-term success will treat data infrastructure as a strategic asset — not just back-office software. Modern technology now plays a direct role in protecting margins, supporting compliance, and enabling smarter growth.

How AGRIS Supports Ethanol Producers

To protect margins in a volatile market, ethanol producers need connected systems built for agribusiness.

AGRIS unifies grain accounting, scale integration, contracts, inventory, and financials into a single platform. This helps ethanol plants achieve:

  • Near real-time visibility into grain and inventory positions
  • Fewer manual reconciliations

Turning Agribusiness Data into Action

November 2025 – Alpharetta, GA – Greenstone Systems, a Cultura company and leading provider of mid-market agribusiness software solutions, today announced the official launch of Insights, a next-generation business intelligence (BI) platform designed to help grain, feed, and agribusiness operations transform operational data from core business systems, including ERPs such as AGRIS, into clear, actionable insights. Insights is a key addition to the Greenstone ecosystem today, with more ERP integrations on the horizon.

Following a successful pilot program with select customers, Insights is now broadly available to the agribusiness community—delivering dashboards, flexible alerts, and intuitive analytics that empower teams to make confident, data-driven decisions.

From Data to Decisions

Insights transforms how agribusinesses view, share, and act on operational information. Connecting directly to the ERP, it unifies grain inventory, discounts, and contracts into a single reliable view. Users can monitor performance, spot trends, and respond instantly to market changes.

From Data to Decisions

Insights transforms how agribusinesses view, share, and act on operational information. Connecting directly to the ERP, it unifies grain inventory, discounts, and contracts into a single reliable view. Users can monitor performancespot trends, and respond instantly to market changes.

Key capabilities include:

  • Near real-time visibility into grain movement and position from any device.
  • Detailed discount and premium tracking to strengthen margin management.
  • Alerts for unsigned or delayed contracts to protect revenue.
  • Year-over-year customer insights to support strategic growth.
  • Scheduled reports and notifications to keep teams aligned.

Insights gives our customers a clearer line of sight into their business. We listened to what our customers needed most—simple, meaningful visibility—and built Insights to help them turn that information into confident, daily decisions.

Duey Yliniemi, General Manager at Greenstone Systems

That immediate access to reliable information is already changing how finance leaders approach reporting and analysis.

From my perspective as a CFO, Insights enables me with immediate visibility without needing to run a report and then manipulate the data in Excel using pivot tables or other formats.

Billy Wickham, CFO at Frontier Ag Inc.

Guided by Customer Experience

Developed in collaboration with pilot users, Insights reflects how agribusinesses actually work. Feedback from early adopters guided core design and functionality choices, ensuring the platform is practical, intuitive, and impactful

Being able to pull my customer information with ease anytime, anywhere is very helpful to me. If we’d had this last year, we would have caught an accidental payment in premiums instead of a subtraction in discounts with one of our larger customers.

Carly Wheeting, Merchandiser at Glacial Lakes Energy

Built for What’s Next

With its launch, Insights marks a new chapter in Greenstone’s ongoing investment in connected, data-driven agribusiness technology. The platform’s flexible foundation will continue to evolve, adding new dashboards, reports, and integrations that build on customer feedback and industry needs.

Insights is more than a reporting tool—it’s a foundation for smarter, faster operations. It also sets the stage for more advanced analytics capabilities in the future, helping our customers unlock the full potential of their data.

Ethanol production moves fast — and precision drives performance. Between dynamic feedstock costs, changing markets, and rising regulatory expectations, producers have more opportunity than ever to strengthen efficiency and compliance. As operations grow and data sources expand, one factor determines success: keeping everything connected, compliant, and under control.

When systems align, ethanol producers gain clarity, consistency, and confidence across every process.

In This Article

Connected Compliance Creates Control

From sustainability reporting to accurate contract settlements and audit readiness, ethanol producers manage a web of requirements. Every movement of grain, every gallon produced, and every co-product sold must link to precise financial data.

When systems are disconnected, compliance becomes harder. However, producers can turn compliance into a competitive advantage with connected systems. Integrated platforms synchronize data automatically, enabling accurate, timely reports and smooth audits — giving teams confidence and control.

Contracts and Margins, Working Together

Contracts define profitability — covering everything from incoming grain purchases to co-product sales. Managing them manually or across multiple systems increases risk and slows visibility.

Centralized systems transform that process. They provide real-time insight into inventory, settlements, and margins, so ethanol producers can act faster, reduce errors, and make smarter financial decisions.

Where AGRIS Fits In

That’s exactly what AGRIS delivers.

For over 40 years, AGRIS has served as the trusted ERP and accounting backbone for leading agribusinesses. Purpose-built for agriculture, AGRIS unites accounting, contract management, and compliance reporting on one connected platform.

With AGRIS, ethanol producers can:

  • Protect margins with real-time visibility into grain, ethanol, and co-product inventory
  • Simplify compliance through automated reporting and audit-ready records
  • Accelerate settlements to strengthen cash flow and reduce delays
  • Eliminate manual reconciliation across contracts, scales, and financials
  • Scale confidently across multiple plants and locations

AGRIS acts as the intelligent core of your ethanol operation — connecting data across financials, inventory, and contracts so your back office performs as efficiently as your production floor.

Operate with Confidence

In today’s ethanol market, confidence comes from control — control over data, compliance, and profitability. With AGRIS, ethanol producers can run smarter, operate cleaner, and grow confidently, knowing every number is accurate and every process is connected.

Agribusiness Software for Ethanol Producers: 5 Key Factors to Consider  https://greenstonesystems.com/agribusiness-software-for-ethanol-producers-5-key-factors/ Tue, 16 Sep 2025 16:54:04 +0000 https://greenstonesystems.com/?p=85059 Discover the 5 key factors for choosing ethanol plant software—ROI, support, integration, scalability, and real-time analytics for producers.

The post Agribusiness Software for Ethanol Producers: 5 Key Factors to Consider  appeared first on Greenstone Systems.

]]>
Choosing the right agribusiness software for ethanol producers can transform your operation—boosting efficiency, protecting margins, ensuring compliance, and providing clearer visibility into inventory and production. The decision can feel overwhelming with so many new ethanol software solutions entering the market. The key is to align the software with your long-term goals and carefully evaluate each option.

Why Choosing the Right Ethanol Software Matters

Ethanol plants operate in a fast-moving, margin-sensitive environment. Software designed specifically for ethanol producers can streamline feedstock procurement, ethanol production tracking, and co-product sales. It can also reduce compliance risks and deliver real-time performance reporting. The right system doesn’t just support day-to-day operations—it positions your ethanol business for sustainable growth and improved financial management.

5 Key Factors for Ethanol Producers When Selecting Software

Before diving into the details, here are the 5 essential factors ethanol producers should evaluate when choosing agribusiness software:

1. Focus on ROI, Not Just Cost

While cost is always a factor, the real value lies in measurable efficiencies and long-term ROI in ethanol software. The right software solution will help you streamline workflows, reduce risks associated with market volatility, provide workflow transparency, minimize manual tasks, and maximize throughput.

For ethanol producers, this can mean automating daily tasks such as matching feedstock purchases against contracts, tracking ethanol production volumes, or balancing co-product sales with shipments. These efficiencies translate into real margin protection—especially valuable in a volatile commodities market.

2. Prioritize Customer Support Backed by Industry Expertise

Ethanol operations are complex, with unique compliance, blending, and reporting requirements. That’s why your software provider’s support team should feel like an extension of your staff.

Look for providers who resolve issues quickly and understand ethanol compliance software and production processes. Reliable, knowledgeable support minimizes downtime, ensures smooth operations, and provides confidence when onboarding new staff, scaling up capacity, or navigating new regulations.

3. Ensure Seamless Technology Integration

Unlike many new entrants offering standalone ethanol solutions, established providers like Greenstone have proven integration capabilities with accounting systems and logistics tracking tools.

Seamless ethanol software integration reduces duplication, prevents data silos, and ensures compliance reporting is accurate. For ethanol producers, this means smoother coordination between grain origination, ethanol production, and downstream sales—giving you a unified, real-time view of your business.

4. Choose a Scalable, Future-Proof Solution

Your ethanol plant software today won’t look the same five years from now. You may expand capacity, add new sites, diversify product lines, or scale up exports. Your software must be ready to support that growth.

A scalable ethanol plant software platform allows you to standardize processes across facilities, expand transaction volumes, and adapt quickly to new regulatory requirements such as the 45Z Tax Credit and the Big Beautiful Bill. With the right system, you avoid disruptive and costly system changes down the road.

5. Look for Real-Time Reporting and Analytics

Real-time insights are critical in ethanol. Software that delivers accurate reporting across feedstock procurement, production efficiency, energy inputs, and co-product sales gives you the visibility needed to protect margins and improve decision-making.

For example, ethanol data analytics can help you track your corn crush and ethanol crush performance, monitor shifts in your crush margin, and use that data to forecast demand, evaluate hedging strategies, and assess operational efficiency in real time. This data-driven approach ensures your team can pivot quickly when market conditions shift.

Why Partner with an Established Ethanol Software Vendor?

The choice in the ethanol industry isn’t just about software features—it’s also about vendor maturity. Many providers in this space are introducing new ethanol software solutions that lack proven integration, focus narrowly on one aspect of the production cycle, or have limited support resources—making them unreliable long-term.

Greenstone brings decades of experience, established processes, and tested systems that ethanol producers can trust. We’ve guided producers through high- and low-margin cycles, giving us the expertise to help you confidently navigate shifting markets. From implementation to ongoing support, we ensure your investment delivers value today and in the future.

The Bottom Line for Ethanol Producers

Choosing the right ethanol plant software isn’t about checking boxes—it’s about finding a partner who can support your growth, protect your margins, and provide the stability your operation needs in a competitive market. By focusing on ROI, productivity, quality control, support, integration, scalability, and analytics—and by working with an established provider—you’ll be positioned for long-term success.

Customer-Driven Development

The beta version of Insights is currently in the hands of Greenstone customers, whose real-world feedback is shaping the first release. This collaborative approach ensures that it will deliver immediate, tangible value to the agribusiness community when Insights launches.

Janet Bear, Grain Division Manager at Frontier Ag Inc.

Insights will officially launch later this year, bringing agribusinesses a new standard of clarity, efficiency, and profitability. With this release, Greenstone continues its commitment to empowering the agribusiness community with trusted, innovative technology.

The Hidden Costs of Manual Processes in Ag Retail https://greenstonesystems.com/the-hidden-costs-of-manual-processes-in-ag-retail/ Mon, 09 Jun 2025 14:21:55 +0000 https://greenstonesystems.com/?p=10246 In ag retail, where margins are compressed and operations move quickly, efficiency isn't just a nice-to-have—it’s essential.

The post The Hidden Costs of Manual Processes in Ag Retail appeared first on Greenstone Systems.

]]>
(And How to Fix It)

In ag retail, where margins are compressed and operations move quickly, efficiency isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s essential. Yet many businesses still rely on manual workflows, outdated spreadsheets, and disconnected systems. While familiar, these legacy practices carry hidden costs that directly impact your bottom line.

Here are five manual processes draining your profits—and how to fix them.

1. Time Is Money—And Manual Work Is a Drain

From rekeying transactions to hunting down paper load sheets, manual tasks take up hours that could be better spent building customer relationships or optimizing business objectives.

Ask yourself:

  • How many hours each week does redundant data entry take up?
  • What would it mean to redirect that time to revenue-generating activities?

 Pro Tip

Multiply those hours by your average labor cost, then imagine recovering that value with automation

2. Manual Errors = Expensive Mistakes

Human error is inevitable when your team juggles handwritten notes, Excel sheets, and disconnected tools. A single typo can cause:

  • Incorrect customer invoicing
  • Over- or under-shipped product
  • Compliance violations or audit issues

These mistakes don’t just cost money—they can damage customer trust and your brand reputation.

3. Poor Visibility Means Slower, Riskier Decisions

Manual processes create data silos that are easy to overlook. One team’s numbers live in spreadsheets, another in a legacy app, and your field staff may still rely on paper logs.

Without real-time access to centralized data, decision-makers are guessing or waiting—two things you can’t afford in a volatile ag market.

4. Scaling Gets Harder, Not Smarter

As you grow—more customers, locations, and product lines—manual systems strain under the pressure. What once worked with a small team starts to break down.

Instead of scaling efficiently, you may employ additional staff to manage the paperwork. Growth becomes stressful and unsustainable.

5. You’re Sitting on Untapped Profit Potential

Every delivery, invoice, and inventory adjustment is rich with data, but if it’s stuck in filing cabinets or spreadsheets, you can’t use it to improve performance.

With the right ag tech, you can:

  • Predict inventory needs
  • Optimize pricing strategies
  • Identify your most valuable customers
  • Spot bottlenecks and inefficiencies

In short, you turn data into dollars.

A Smarter Path Forward: Digitize and Integrate

The solution? Purpose-built ag software that eliminates manual work and connects your operations—from the scale house to the back office.

Greenstone helps ag retailers transition from manual to modern with tools like:

  • AGRIS: Grain accounting and contract management
  • MyGrower: A self-serve portal and mobile app for customer access
  • Warehouse Pro: Real-time inventory and warehouse management

You don’t need to overhaul everything at once. Start with the pain points that cost you the most, then scale up as your business evolves.

Ready to Take the First Step?

Manual processes are holding your ag business back—and it’s time to let them go. Greenstone can help you digitize operations, reduce risk, and unlock growth.

Why Data Integrity Matters in Ag Operations

In the evolving agricultural landscape, grain elevators, co-ops, processors, and ag retailers face growing operational complexity. From tighter profit margins and regulatory demands to increasing expectations for traceability, data integrity is one key factor that enables success in your technology suite and the source of informed decision making.

Why Accurate Ag Data Is Essential

Maintaining clean, consistent, and reliable data in agriculture is no small feat. Many ag businesses still rely on outdated systems, manual entry, and spreadsheets, which increase the risk of data errors. Duplicated or inaccurate information, or data lost between the scale house and back office, can lead to significant issues such as inventory discrepancies, accounting errors, basis inconsistency, incorrect position management, invoicing mistakes, compliance challenges, strained grower relationships, and misrepresentation of margins and profitability.

Real-World Risks of Poor Data Management

For a grain cooperative, the data journey often begins well before harvest, with contracts. Then, when a load arrives, the scale house becomes a pivotal point of data capture. It’s not just about recording weights—it’s where ticketing information defines the grade and quality attributes of the commodity. This data directly impacts profitability, inventory accuracy, and customer satisfaction. If scale data isn’t accurate or integrated with inventory, contract, and accounting systems, it can lead to costly reconciliation issues, eroded trust, and operational inefficiencies.

Timeliness is also crucial. Decisions based on outdated or incomplete data can slow transactions, delay settlements, and obscure vital business insights. Without seamless system integration, even the best efforts to clean or centralize data can fall short.

Data Integrity Is a Business Asset

Many ag operations mistakenly treat data integrity as just an IT concern. But data errors aren’t just technical issues—they’re business risks that can cost money, reduce efficiency, and damage customer relationships. That’s why it’s critical to implement Systems of Record and workflows, prioritizing accurate data from the first entry point to final reporting. Reliable data gives ag leaders the confidence to make informed decisions that drive productivity, reduce risk, and support long-term growth.
